Figuring out advancement of women faculty is all the rage in the academy. Many people offer very good advice; however, advice is hard to follow, and sometimes good advice misunderstands what the problem is. People announce their success by giving advice; we don’t learn about the mistakes along the way, leading to a belief that the actions people took supported their success, when we know things happen for reasons well beyond us. Jennifer Diascro (University of California in the District of Columbia) and Judith Grant (Ohio University) and I are workshopping success and failure to try to pluralize what we define as success and learn from the problems too.
